Singer Robin Gibb has died aged 62, after an ongoing battle with cancer.  Robin was one third of the Bee Gees, along with his brother Maurice and Barry.

Robin is widely considered as a pioneer of disco who helped turn the genre into a global phenomenon.

The Bee Gees had numerous hits and sold more than 200m records as both writers and performers, with their falsetto harmonies.

The family released a brief statement last night: "The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery.

"The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

Tributes have already flooded in from a range of stars including The Script, Shane from Westlife and Michelle Williams who Tweeted:  'RIP Robin Gibb!! #EMOTIONSTAKINGMEOVER (I'm so glad DC3 got the chance to remake that song).'
